ABCDUCHAMP : THE EXHIBITION TO UNDERSTAND MARCEL DUCHAMP

Marcel Duchamp is probably the artist who counts the most for the creators of our time. Yet who can say that he really knows this work with endless ramifications?

Rouen's territory was strongly influenced by the presence of Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968), from his birth in Blainville-Crevon to his burial in the monumental cemetery of Rouen. The year 2018, marks the fiftieth anniversary of his death and will be the occasion to demonstrate through multiple initiatives the attachment that this territory brings to him. It is in this context that Rouen Fine Arts Museum organizes a large exhibition consecrated to his work.

des Musées Métropolitains allows this event to be built around exceptional loans, notably the artist's most emblematic ready-mades, such as Fontaine - which hit the headlines in 1917 - or the Bicycle Wheel. It is with these works that Duchamp takes note, in the 1910s, of the end of painting, exhausted according to him by centuries of experimentation and pictorial movements that succeeded one another at a frantic pace. Completed by the works of the museum and unpublished archives, this exhibition offers in the form of an alphabet an introduction to Marcel Duchamp, allowing everyone to find their way in a work that remains an enigma for a large part of the public.

The summer of 2018 will be an opportunity to discover in a new light, one of the outstanding figures of the past century, the incisive spirit and humor of one who is often considered the father of contemporary art.
